[edit] History

[edit] Football in Lankaran

Football is the most popular sports in Lankaran since 50s years of 20th century. However, in 1978, there was established first football team Khazar to participate at Azerbaijan SSR football league, during 1978-84 years. The team was recreated in 1989. During 1992-95 years, Khazar took part in Azerbaijan Top League and Azerbaijan Cup tournaments, reaching final game in 1994 (lost to FC Kapaz, 0-2). [3] But for a following season the team withdrew after 12 games due to financial difficulties and relegated to Azerbaijan Second Division, that was held only once in 1995-96 season. [4] A year later, the team broke up. Once again it was re-established in 2000. The 2000-01 season Khazar passed at Azerbaijan First Division for the only time in its history. That season is memorable because of Lankaran derby, as there were two teams from Lankaran to participate at First Division and Azerbaijan Cup. Khazar beat Shilavar, 8-3 on aggregate, in Azerbaijan Cup 1/16 finals. [5]

[edit] Caucasian Chelsea

The club was founded in 2004 by Azerbaijani entrepreneur Mubariz Mansimov and dubbed by the local media as "Caucasian Chelsea" due Khazar's strong financial position.[6][7] Khazar also managed to win the CIS Cup in 2008 after defeating FC Pakhtakor Tashkent in the final.[8][9]

After Mircea Rednic's appointment, who have signed a string of Romanian players and footballers from Liga I, club did not find success in European cups.[10][11]On 4 December 2011, Khazar announced that Rednic had been sacked by the club due to a run of poor performances.[12][13]

[edit] Stadium

Lankaran City Stadium

Khazar Lankaran's home ground is Lankaran City Stadium. It has a capacity of 15,000 and is the third largest stadium in Azerbaijan. The stadium also known as Fırtınalar meydanı (Arena of Storms), named after club's local supporters Fırtına fan group.[14][15]

In 17 July 2009, UEFA approved stadium for the usage during international football matches.[16] The stadium hosted its first senior international match on 5 September 2009, between Azerbaijan and Finland.[17]

[edit] Rivalry with Neftchi Baku

There is often a fierce rivalry between the two strongest teams in the Azerbaijan Premier League, and this is particularly the case in Azerbaijan, where the game between Khazar Lankaran and Neftchi Baku is known as Böyük Oyun (The Great Game).[18][19][20]

Nowadays, the rivalry is renewed on an almost annual basis, with both teams often challenging each other for the league championship.
