Description

On July 29, 1974, at the Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia, eleven Episcopal women deacons were ordained the first women in the Episcopal priesthood. This photograph, which was picked up worldwide, shows the women deacons at the communion rail during the part of the service in which the ordaining bishops ask them questions regarding their preparation for the priesthood.
