English: Black Bear Hotel front desk, Allentown, Pennsylvania, 1885
In the 1890s, the traveling salesmen who came to Allentown could always find a welcome place at the Black Bear Hotel at 835 Hamilton Street in Allentown. The hotel offered a stable for horses, and a tap room. In 1890, the Black Bear Hotel was purchased and expanded into the Grand Central Hotel. A few years later, in 1897, the Grand Central was leased by Max and Charles Hess and it became the basis for the Hess Brothers Department Store. |
