Tinctures of the inescutcheon are omited in the original description. Azur a lion or is said to be the tinctures on Gaso.fr, which agrees with the emblematic colours of the town.

Ces armoiries seraient celles du marquis de Barthelas (XVIIIème siècle), utilisées ensuite par la ville.
Le site de la ville ne précise pas les couleurs de l'écusson ; la représentation qui en est faite correspondrait à de sable au lion d'or. Cependant, les couleurs de cette représentation ne correspondent généralement pas au blasonnement qui l'accompagne. Le site Gaso.fr indique un écusson d'azur au lion d'or. Bleu et jaune étant les couleurs emblématiques de la ville, c'est le choix qui a été fait ici.

Les armoiries complètes sont dessinées sur le logo du FC-Gueugnon, avec des couleurs modifiées (Logo du FCG sur la Wikimédia francophone)
