Summary

Description
English: The use of tiled stoves likely originated in the Alps in the late 13th century. The idea developed from a simple clay dome to an ornate tower-like structure. Open fireplaces were replaced when the tiled stove became artistically integrated into both the architecture and fittings of the rooms of palaces, castles, convents and monasteries. The surfaces of the tiles were decorates and the subjects portrayed varied considerably. The top level of the tiles on this stove portray the Expulsion of Hagar (from the Old Testament), the second level of tiles portray musicians, the third level depicts the twelve apostles, and the tiles on the firebox are decorated with unidentified portraits. The Tiled stove dates to c.1560 and is made of lead-glazed earthernware. It originates from either Germany or Central Europe. This immense object is today located within the Koerner Gallery section of the UBC Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver, Canada. Its UBC museum catalogue number is Ch.267
