The geometry of the Cherenkov radiation. In the figure, v is the velocity of the particle (red arrow), β is v/c, n is the refractive index of the medium. The blue arrows shows the direction of the radiation. So:\cos \theta=\frac1{n\beta}

Made by Arpad Horvath (previous versions en:Image:Cherenkov.png and hu:Image:Cserenkov.png)

I created it with xfig (Xfig source: http://www.szgti.bmf.hu/harp/gnu/particle-physics/cserenkov.fig ), I saved it to SVG, and modified with Inkscape.

English: Please note, this figure shows the ideal case of no dispersion, which means that the refractive index n is independent of the wavelength λ. In reality n will depend on λ and hence the wave front (governed by group velocity) will no longer be perpendicular to the the direction of the radiation (governed by phase velocity).
Deutsch: Bitte beachten, dass diese Abbildung nur den idealen Fall ohne Dispersion zeigt, also Brechungsindex n unabhängig von λ. In der Realität ist n eine Funktion von λ und damit werden die Wellenfront (bestimmt durch die Gruppengeschwindigkeit) und die Ausbreitungsrichtung des Lichts (bestimmt durch die Phasengeschwindigkeit) nicht mehr senkrecht aufeinander stehen.
