This image uses the following shorthand terminology for the interfacial energy at the following interfaces:

  • Solid-Liquid: \gamma_\mathrm{SL}
  • Liquid-Gas: \gamma_\mathrm{LG} (= surface tension, sometimes referred to simply using \gamma, such as in the Wikipedia article on Contact Angle or \gamma_\mathrm{LV} for "liquid-vapour")
  • Solid-Gas: \gamma_\mathrm{SG} (sometimes referred to using \gamma_\mathrm{SV} for "solid-vapour", such as in the Wikipedia article on Contact Angle)
