Description
English: National D-Day Memorial, Bedford, Virginia

MEDIUM: 1 photograph : digital, TIFF file, color.

NOTES:

The National D-Day Memorial consists of six components that correspond to events leading to and from D-Day. The first, Richard S. Reynolds Sr. Garden, represents the planning and preparation for D-Day. Elmon T. Gray Plaza, the largest circular component beyond Reynolds Garden, focuses on the Channel crossing and landing in France. Two smaller circular components contiguous with Gray Plaza acknowledge the role of the Air Force (Maurice T. Lawhorne Circle) and the Navy (circle as yet unnamed). The Overlord Arch is the central feature of Robey W. Estes, Sr., Plaza, which memorializes the Allies' D-Day victory and beachhead consolidation. Beyond it, Edward R. Stettinius, Jr., Parade fans outward from its central walkway to symbolize the Allies' wide-ranging effort to vanquish the Axis, restore Europe, and secure the peace.
