Summary

Description
English: Fred Harris at the LBJ Presidential Library in 2018. The LBJ Presidential Library, along with the University of Texas at Austin's Social Justice Institute and several other campus partners, commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Kerner Commission Report with a panel discussion on Monday, March 5, 2018.

The Kerner Commission was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in the aftermath of the 1967 urban race riots to study segregation and racism in America. The discussion about the Kerner Report and racial inequality today was moderated by Dr. Eric Tang, associate professor in UT’s African and African Diaspora Studies Department.

Panelists included former U.S. Senator Fred Harris, D-Oklahoma, the last surviving member of the Kerner Commission; Julian Castro, former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and a visiting professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs; and Kathleen McElroy, interim dean of the School of Journalism at UT’s Moody College of Communication.
