Archbishop Pinto was born in Bari, Italy on May 26, 1952. He was ordained as a priest on April 1, 1978 and holds a doctorate in Canon Law. He is fluent in Italian, French, English and Spanish. He entered the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See on May 1, 1984, and has served successively in Papua New Guinea, Argentina and the Secretariat of State in Vatican City. He also served as apostolic nuncio to Senegal, Cape Verde, Mali and Guinea-Bissau, and has been assigned as Apostolic Delegate to Mauritania. Prior to his current appointment, the archbishop was apostolic nuncio in Chile since 2007. A Papal or Apostolic Nuncio is the permanent diplomatic representative of the Holy See to a state or international organization. The Apostolic Nuncio holds the rank of an ambassador, and is granted the deanship of the country’s diplomatic corps.[5]Pope names new nuncio to Manila New Vatican envoy, 16th to Philippines, comes to Asia after service in Chile[6] Msgr. Gabor Pinter.
