Summary

Description

Chemistry teaching and Research Building at Monash University. Architect: Lyons 2015 Scupture - Built Unbuilt Unbuildable : James Angus. Commissioned by the Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA), Built Unbuilt Unbuildable was conceived by celebrated Australian artist James Angus. The structure of the work riffs off the cage-life fused-ring structure of the Buckminsterfullerene C60 carbon molecule, known colloquially as a ‘bucky ball’. Resembling a soccer ball, ‘bucky balls’ are considered one of the most stable of molecules because of their beautiful and intricate symmetry. In Angus’ artwork, the 'bucky ball' form has been appropriated and corrupted—instead of a shell like shape, the spherical structure is constructed from a series of steel pipe cones protruding from a centre.

Inspired by its proximity to the Faculty of Science on Clayton campus, Built Unbuilt Unbuildable borrows from the architecture of the new Green Chemical Futures facility, and is intended to be a celebration of engineering, a discipline devoted to the invention of structures, systems, materials and processes.
