Summary

Description
English: Mauley Cross. Mauley Cross stands about a mile north of Stape by the side of the medieval Brown Howe Road which is now better known as being part of the Forest Drive through Cropton Forest. The Cross is named after the de Mauley family of Mulgrave Castle which is situated north-west of Whitby. The family were notorious poachers and it is presumed that the cross marks their boundary of grazing rights. Having once stood on open moorland, Mauley Cross now seems 'out of place' surrounded by forest pines.
