[edit] Summary
| Description |
This figure shows two DNA segments (regions between recombination positions) A and B. The sequences of the DNA segments diverge earlier than the species. A large effective population size (Ne) in the ancestral population (left) preserves different variants of the DNA segments (=alleles) for a longer period of time. Therefor, on average, the gene divergence times (tA for DNA segment A; tB for DNA segment B) will deviate more from the time the species diverge (tS) compared to a small ancestral effective population size (right). Therefore genetic data can be used to assess the divergence time of species as well as the effective population size of the common ancestor, if it is derived from many different unlinked DNA segments. |
