"Follow That Egg" is the tenth episode of the ninth season of the American animated television series South Park. It originally aired on Comedy Central in the United States on November 2, 2005. In the episode, Mrs. Garrison tries reuniting with her ex-boyfriend Mr. Slave, but finds out that he is going to marry Big Gay Al after the governor of Colorado legalizes same-sex marriage in the state. Garrison, furious, goes to the governor and tells him that if same-sex couples get married, they will have the right to raise children, which she believes they are incapable of doing, and so decides to use a class project as a way to get the governor to change his mind.

The episode was written by Kenny Hotz and is rated TV-MA in the United States, except on syndicated broadcasts, where this episode is rated TV-14.

Plot[edit]

Mrs. Garrison pairs off the kids in her class and assigns them to care for eggs as if they were babies as part of a lesson in parenting responsibility. Stan is worried he will get paired with his ex-girlfriend Wendy, whom he has not spoken to since their breakup. However, Wendy is assigned to Kyle while Stan is paired with Bebe. The assignments cause tension among the students, as Stan starts to suspect Kyle of having his eyes on Wendy while Bebe is angry at Stan's indifference to their egg.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Garrison, having been watching Stan, is reminded of her old boyfriend, Mr. Slave, who broke up with her after her sex change operation. Garrison attempts to take Mr. Slave back, only to learn that he is now in a relationship with Big Gay Al and that they are going to get married as soon as the governor of Colorado legalizes such unions. Mrs. Garrison, mad with jealousy, dedicates herself to doing whatever she can to prevent their union from being legalized. The governor demands a study demonstrating that gay families are unstable before agreeing to veto the marriage bill. Mrs. Garrison thus reorganizes Stan, Kyle, Wendy and Bebe into same-sex couples, hoping that Stan's poor "parenting" skills will destroy the egg and provide the results the governor needs.

Wendy becomes upset because Stan and Kyle now have the egg that originally belonged to her and Kyle—she has no faith in Stan as a father, and misses it as if it were her own child. The boys remain on bad terms; Stan is still suspicious about Kyle's motives with Wendy and frequently snaps at him, while Kyle is a little confused as to what has made Stan so aggressive. Meanwhile, Cartman breaks his egg and tries to ask Garrison to give his partner an A, because it was not her fault—and finally arguing that with his F, together their grades should average out to C−. However, Garrison is so bent on the same-sex marriage law to be vetoed, she gives Cartman a new egg, and angrily threatens Cartman that if he breaks the other egg, Garrison would "break both his legs and burn down his house". Garrison makes plans for the final egg check in front of the governor's office, and, to make sure Stan and Kyle's egg is broken when they present it, hires an assassin named Jakartha to destroy the egg. Just as Stan is boasting to Kyle over the phone about how well he has looked after the egg, Jakartha fires a bullet through Stan's window. The bullet hits the egg and blows it to pieces in Stan's hand, causing Stan to scream in terror.

Kyle comes over to Stan's house and Stan tells him to just go be with Wendy, but Kyle reveals that he feared Stan's ability as a parent and so gave Stan a fake egg while he kept and saved the real one. Kyle also tells Stan that he had never had any interest in Wendy, since he just wanted an A on the project; Stan merely viewed her as a partner. The two boys reconcile and rush to the governor's office in a taxi, with Kyle calling Mrs. Garrison and telling her their egg is fine and that they are on their way. A horrified Garrison demands that Jakartha destroys the egg before it reaches the podium. Jakartha, fearing for his reputation, opens fire on the crowd to destroy the egg. Stan and Kyle rush through the crowd, narrowly avoiding Jakartha's gunfire and hidden grenades in the ground. After Jakartha detonates all the bombs, they reach the podium weary and hurt. Stan presents the intact egg to Garrison and the governor before passing out from exhaustion. The governor inspects the egg and, upon seeing that it is undamaged, announces that same-sex marriage is now legal in Colorado.

The episode concludes with Mr. Slave and Big Gay Al marrying in matching wedding dresses with Father Maxi officiating. Randy congratulates Stan and Kyle for what they have done for same-sex marriage rights, though they are still not sure what role they played in it. Wendy tells Stan that she was impressed by his parenting skills, but Stan responds by saying, "Like I give a crap about what you think, Wendy," and Wendy walks away.
