Foreign-born population of the United Kingdom
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to the 2001 United Kingdom Census, 8.3 per cent of the country's population were foreign-born as of April 2001.[1]
The table below lists the places of birth of UK residents according to the 2001 Census.[2] Where available population figures including the following are also stated:
- British born people with roots in that nation (i.e. people belonging to that ethnic group or nationality, e.g. British born people of Jamaican descent, British of French descent, British of German descent and others).
- People born in nor the UK or the listed nation (e.g. British people of African American descent and British people of Chinese Jamaican descent).
- Most recent figures for the population of people born in that nation
- Note: The African-Caribbean communities total populations are rough estimates based on the percentage of people born in that country against the total Afro-Caribbean community.
[edit] Institute for Public Policy Research analysis
In 2005 the Institute for Public Policy Research published an analysis of data from the 2001 Census, revealing the number of people included in the census who were born outside the British Isles, where they lived, and comparing this information against the 1991 Census.[36] The results were made available on the BBC website.[37] Note that this data refers to Great Britain only, rather than the whole of the UK, because of the lack of digital boundaries in the census data for Northern Ireland.[36]
