Frankenmachine is slang for a computer that has been cobbled together from various new and old components. Frankenmachines are usually built by technical enthusiasts or other geeks who are either interested in just making them work or saving money.

In the former case, this can be a lot of fun for the builder. In the latter, the troubles that result are often not worth the cost savings.
