[edit] Name and history
It is one of twenty-one Franklin Townships statewide.
Franklin Township was formed from the Connecticut Western Reserve. It was initially 25 square miles (65 km2) and was purchased by Aaron Olmstead at a cost of 12.5 cents an acre.[1] Olmstead named the township after his son, Aaron Franklin Olmstead.[7] The first settlers, the Haymakers, came in November 1805 and settled along the Cuyahoga River in what would become the city of Kent.[8] Initially, the settlement was simply "Franklin," but later as mills began to spring up along the river the village became known as "Franklin Mills" before officially changing the name to Kent in 1867. Another settlement also formed in the township just north of Franklin Mills, known as Carthage.[9] It slowly merged with Franklin Mills as they grew and is today part of Kent's west side.
[edit] Government
The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township fiscal officer, who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the fiscal officership or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees. As of 2006, the trustees are Mark Beckwith, Keith Benjamin, and Gary Falstad, and the fiscal officer is Sue Lucas.[10]
