Frederick I (German: Friedrich, c. 1175 – 16 April 1198[1]), known as Frederick the Catholic (German: Friedrich der Katholische), was the Duke of Austria from 1195 to 1198. He was a member of the House of Babenberg.[2]

Life[edit]

Frederick the Catholic was born in 1175, the son of Duke Leopold V of Austria and Helena of Hungary. In late spring 1197, he joined the German Crusade of 1197, led by Emperor Henry VI with Wolfger of Erla, Bishop of Passau.[1] Frederick died while returning from Palestine at Ptolemais.[3] He never married.[4] Wolfger performed the German funeral custom, Mos Teutonicus, on him before bringing him back.[1] He was buried next to his father in Heiligenkreuz Abbey.[1]
