FreeVMS is a free software clone of the VMS computer operating system, licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. As of 2010, the project is in the early stages of development. The latest version is 0.4.
It consists of a kernel (planned to be POSIX-compliant[citation needed]) and a DCL command-line interpreter.
[edit] Architecture
Unlike the traditional target architectures of VMS systems — VAX, Alpha and IA-64 — FreeVMS originally only supported i386 processors. Recently development has switched to the AMD64 architecture, with i386 development canceled. Plans exist to port FreeVMS to PPC64 and SPARC64 in future.
