"Free to Fall" is the third and final single lifted from Debbie Harry's second solo album, Rockbird in the United States, but was released as the second single from the album in the UK. Unlike the album's previous two singles, it failed to chart on the Hot 100 or any other significant U.S. chart. It did, however, peak at number forty-six in the UK, which was quite a decline from "French Kissin'", which peaked in the top ten. The B-side to the single, "Feel the Spin", was a previous U.S. dance hit from the Krush Groove soundtrack.
Like the other two singles from Rockbird, "Free to Fall" is a mid-tempo almost ballad that is delivered with hazy vocals from Harry. The single received little promotion upon its single release and as a result it underperformed on the charts. The only source of promotion was the music video, which was serviced to video stations.
The 7" edit of "Free to Fall" is included on Chrysalis Records/EMI's 1999 compilation Most of All - The Best of Deborah Harry.
The line "...sinking in the sea of love" was used previously in a Blondie song, "Man Overboard", from the album Blondie (1976).
