[edit] Opening narration

James Elwood, master programmer, in charge of Mark 502-741, commonly known as 'Agnes,' the world's most advanced electronic computer. Machines are made by men for man's benefit and progress, but when man ceases to control the products of his ingenuity and imagination he not only risks losing the benefit, but he takes a long and unpredictable step into—the Twilight Zone.

[edit] Synopsis

James Elwood, a programmer, replaces Fred after that computer programmer cannot resolve some unknown functional error the computer has. James quickly fixes the problem, and later develops a romantic interest with a co-worker Millie. After he proves to be romantically inept with a live female, he resorts to his computer (named Agnes) for advice. However, the computer ends up giving James bad advice as it eventually leads to Millie meeting another male employee (who ends up spending the evening with James' romantic rival). The next day, James gradually realizes that 'Agnes,' the supercomputer he works on, has fallen in love with him, as the computer begins to lose logical control over its own functions. James is unable to resolve Agnes' dysfunctional operation and his boss suggests he take a vacation. His replacement? His romantic rival, a computer programmer that was below his level.

[edit] Closing narration

Advice to all future male scientists: be sure you understand the opposite sex, especially if you intend being a computer expert. Otherwise, you may find yourself, like poor Elwood, defeated by a jealous machine, a most dangerous sort of female, whose victims are forever banished—to the Twilight Zone.

[edit] Preview for next week's story

Next on The Twilight Zone, the stalwart typewriter of Richard Matheson brings us a most intriguing tale of riders, pale horses and peeks into the future. It stars Diana Hyland and it concerns itself with some very unlooked for and some unpredictable events. It's called "Spur of the Moment" and it's recommended for those of you who'd like to take a look at the next page of the calendar before it's time. On Twilight Zone next, "Spur of the Moment."
