The State Public Science and Technical Library (abbr. GPNTB, Russian: ГПНТБ, Russian: Государственная Публичная Научно-Техническая Библиотека России) is the national library of Russia, located in Moscow. Founded 1958 on the basis of the State Science Library of the Ministry of Higher Education of the Soviet Union. It is in central Moscow (about 2 km from the Kremlin).
The mission of the library is in obtaining and storing national and foreign science and technical literature, informational and bibliographical services for individual readers, enterprises, organisations and other institutions of the Russian Federation and foreign countries, development and application of up-to-date automated information technologies.
The Library has a status of Scientific Research Institute with an academic council consisting of 30 well-known scientists and specialists in information technologies.
The Library has an integrated complex system "IRBIS" for the automatization[clarification needed] of data processing. This system became the official standard for the other libraries. The Library was one of the leaders in using a technology of barcodes.
Departments include an Internet cafe, information center, and an education department.
