[edit] Troy Bolton
- Played by Zac Efron, and appears in the first three installments High School Musical.
- Troy is the male protagonist and the most popular male student in East high of the High School Musical films. He is the only son of Coach Jack Bolton and Lucille Bolton. Troy is a well rounded student; holding modest grades and excelling as East High Wildcats' Varsity Boys Basketball team captain. Troy's best friend is Chad, and the pair have been friends and teammates since they were young. The pair are seen together for much of the franchise, but Troy may also be seen alongside his girlfriend, Gabriella, whom he met while on vacation. Throughout the series, Troy seems to struggle with his relationships, but always manages to bring everything back together. In High School Musical, Troy shows an added interest in the Spring Musical, but Chad attempts to thwart his chances in landing a role. In High School Musical 2, Sharpay gets Troy a job at her country club and vies for his affections by offering him various luxuries. In High School Musical 3: Senior Year, Gabriella has a chance to attend college early, and Troy is convinced he is the only reason holding her back.

- Played by Vanessa Hudgens, and appears in the first three installments of HSM.
- Gabriella is the female protagonist of the High School Musical films. She is the only daughter to the un-first-named Ms. Montez. Gabriella also the most popular female student along with Troy. Gabriella is a shy bookworm excelling in math and science, and is newest student at East High. Gabriella holds the affections for Troy, even receiving a special necklace with a "T" pendant. Thwarting the effort to hide her nerdy image, Gabriella was invited to join the Scholastic Team by team captain, Taylor, who eventually becoming her best friend. Throughout the series, Gabriella is loyal to her Wildcat friends but often struggles with her relationship with Troy. In HSM, Gabriella is convinced that she and Troy make an awkward pair and the two are forced to break-up. In HSM2, though Troy is committed to Gabriella, he seems to be spending more time with Sharpay and she is concerned for his loyalty. In HSM3, Gabriella takes the chance to attend college early, but Troy gets her to come back to East High to stabilize the status quo.
[edit] Sharpay Evans
- Played by Ashley Tisdale, and appears in the first three installments of HSM.
- Sharpay is the female antagonist of the High School Musical films. She is the only daughter of Vance and Darby Evans, and is Ryan's twin sister. Ryan and she are the co-presidents of the Drama Club and apparently land all the lead roles. Other than striving to become the school's self-declared fashionista, Sharpay also vies for the affections of Troy and hopes the pair will become East High's power couple. Throughout the series, Sharpay always gets what she wants, but to other people's expense. In HSM, she convinces Ms. Darbus to reschedule the Spring Musical call backs, in an effort to thawart Troy and Gabriella's chance to audtion. In HSM2, she gets Troy a job at her family's country club, but the other Wildcats are on her territory again. In HSM3, Ms. Darbus announces a chance for one student to audition for Juilliard, but someone else earns it instead.
[edit] Ryan Evans
- Played by Lucas Grabeel, and appears in the first three installments of HSM.
- Ryan starts as the male antagonist in the first High School Musical film, but later becomes friends with the Wildcats in HSM2 and HSM3. He is the only son of Vance and Darby Evans, and is Sharpay's twin brother. Sharpay and he are the co-presidents of the Drama Club, and he also enjoys wearing different styles of hats, as does his HSM3 love interest, Kelsi. Throughout the series, Ryan often times seems to be is his sister's shadow than in his own spotlight, but slowly emerges from the background. In HSM, Sharpay continues to thwart everyone else's chances, but always includes Ryan in her devious plans. In HSM2, when Sharpay spends more time luring Troy, Ryan grows close to the Wildcats, even choreographing a musical number for the talent show. In HSM3, Ryan is offered a shot at Juilliard alongside Kelsi.
[edit] Chad Danforth
- Played by Corbin Bleu, and appears in the first three installments of HSM.
- Chad is Troy's best friend. He is the only son of Charlie and the un-first-named Mrs. Danforth. Chad is an active member of the East High Wildcats' Varsity Boys Basketball team. He always has Troy's back even in times when Troy's attention heads in different directions. Throughout the series, Chad always shows an interest in the people and things that go on around him, including HSM3 love interest, Taylor. In HSM, when Troy shows an added interest in the Spring Musical, Chad feels guilty for discouraging Troy's chance to audition. In HSM2, Chad gets excited for his summer job at the country club, and stays loyal to his Wildcat friends. In HSM3, after the whole homeroom is forced to partake in the Spring Musical, Chad does not hold back his abilities to sing and dance beside best friend, Troy.
[edit] Taylor McKessie
- Played by Monique Coleman, and appears in the first three installments of HSM.
- Taylor is the academically sound Scholastic Team captain. When a note slipped in her locker revealing Gabriella's winning past, Taylor invites her to join the Scholastic Team in an effort to win the upcoming Decatholan. Throughout the series, Taylor displays a more mature and intellectual character but always manages to have youthful state of mind. In HSM, she and Chad stage a school-wide computer glitch in an effort to distract everyone and allowing Troy and Gabriella to attend the Spring Musical auditions. In HSM2, Taylor earns the position of "Junior Activities Director" and is forced to tell the Wildcats they are not allowed to partake in the talent show. In HSM3, Taylor encourages Gabriella to accept the offer to attend college early, but also helps Chad convince Troy to bring her back.

[edit] Kelsi Nielsen
- Played by Olesya Rulin, and appears in the first three installments HSM.
- Kelsi is the resident playwright for the Drama Club, and also enjoys wearing different kinds of hats, as does her HSM3 love interest, Ryan. Throughout the series, Kelsi is often seen sitting behind a piano, and is also a pleasant singer. Overtime, she gains more self-confidence and a boldness to stand up for herself against Sharpay. In HSM1, she was introduced as the timid songwriter for East High's winter musical, Twinkle Town. In HSM2, Kelsi was hired as the lounge piano player for Lava Springs. In HSM3, it is revealed in the end that Kelsi was chosen for the Juilliard scholarship alongside Ryan.
[edit] Zeke Baylor
- Played by Chris Warren Jr., and appears in the first three installments HSM.
- Zeke is an active member of the East High Wildcats' Varsity Boy's Basketball team, and is a closet baker. Throughout the series, Zeke is often seen tagging along with Jason in various activities, and has a small crush on Sharpay, even offering to bake her a souffle.
[edit] Martha Cox
- Played by Kaycee Stroh, and appears in the first three installments HSM.
- Martha is one of the more shy, scholastic students, and is a closet hip-hop dancer. Throughout the series, Martha slowly comes out of her shell. After word comes of Tory and Gabriella's audition and fear of the disbalance of the status quo, Martha reveals her own added interest in hip-hop dancing.

- Played by Ryne Sanborn, and appears in the first three installments HSM.
- Jason is a member of the East High Wildcats' Varsity Boy's Basketball team. Throughout the series, Jason is often seen tagging along with Zeke in various activities.
[edit] Tiara Gold
- Played by Jemma McKenzie-Brown, and only appears in HSM3.
- Tiara is British exchange student who has grown a fondness for Sharpay, who hires her as her personal assistant. Tiara starts copying Sharpay in every way, and eventually takes over Sharpay's role in the Spring Musical.
[edit] Donny Dion
- Played by Justin Martin, and only appears in HSM3.
- Donny is the towel boy for the East High Wildcats' Varsity Boy's Basketball team and idolizes Chad. As Jimmie's best friend, his gentle qualities tend to balance the craziness that is Jimmie. The pair strives to be a younger version of Troy and Chad.
[edit] Jimmie "The Rocket" Zara
- Played by Matt Prokop, and only appears in HSM3.
- Jimmie is an active member of the East High Wildcats' Varsity Boy's Basketball team and idolizes Troy. As Donny's best friend, he tends to be the more wild one of the pair, who strive be a younger version of Troy and Chad.

[edit] Principal Matsui
- Played by Joey Miyashima, and only appears in HSM & cameo in HSM3.
- Mr. Matsui is the principal of East High and is strong supporter of the Wildcats' Varsity Boys Basketball Team. When Coach Bolton approaches him arguing that Ms. Darbus placed Troy and Chad in detention for ludicrous reasoning, he settles the argument in favor of Coach Bolton.
[edit] Ms. Darbus
- Played by Alyson Reed, and appears in the first three installments of HSM.
- Ms. Darbus is the Drama Club sponsor and homeroom teacher for Troy, Gabriella, and the rest of the Wildcats. She is a very animated woman, who prefers structure and discipline and has a strong distaste for cellular phone interruption. When Troy and Gabriella finally show off their musical abilities, Ms. Darbus finds the pair a fine fit for the theater in addition to their athletic/academic destiny.
[edit] Coach & Mrs. Jack and Lucille Bolton
- Played by Bart Johnson and Leslie Wing respectively, and appear in the first three installments of HSM.
- The Boltons are the parents of Troy Bolton, and Coach Bolton is the Head Coach of the East High Wildcats' Varsity Boys Basketball team. When Troy expresses an interest in the Spring Musical, he strongly discourages Troy's decision. Although he pushes Troy to pursue basketball in college, Coach Bolton finally comes to the realization that Troy may also have a shot in theater.
[edit] Ms. Montez
- Played by Socorro Herrera, and appears in the first three installments of HSM.
- Ms. Montez in the single mother of Gabriella. Prior to moving to Albuquerque, she and Gabriella have relocated many times because of her job. As promised the winter of her Junior year, Ms. Montez tells Gabriella that they will not move again until after she graduates high school. She is supportive of her daughter's decision to attend college early and when she decides to move back.
[edit] Mr. & Mrs. Vance and Darby Evans
- Played by Robert Curtis Brown and Jessica Tuck respectively, and appear in HSM2 & HSM3.
- The Evans are the wealthy parents of twin siblings, Sharpay and Ryan. Although the pair has their children attend Public School, they are able to provide them with various luxuries, such as Sharpay's pink convertible and Ryan's affair with stylized hats, and are supportive of their childrens' desire to pursue theater.
[edit] Mr. & Mrs. Charlie Danforth
- Played by David Reivers and Yolanda Wood respectively, and only appear in HSM3.
- The Danforths are the parents of Chad Danforth. The Danforths have close ties with the Boltons as their sons have been friends and teammates since childhood. They are also supportive of Chad's decision to pursue basketball in college.
[edit] Mr. Thomas Fulton
- Played by Mark L. Taylor, and only appears in HSM2.
- Mr. Fulton is the manager of Lava Springs Country Club. He is a man who prefers structure and discipline, and believes that "the member is always right" in an effort to keep them.
