γ-Carotene is a carotenoid; one of the many isomers of carotene. Along with several other carotenoids, γ-Carotene is a vitamer of vitamin A in herbivores and omnivores. The carotenoids of vitamin A are converted to retinol by the enzyme 15-15'-dioxygenase. Carnivores lack this enzyme to convert carotenoids to retinol, and therefore, is useless to carnivores.
