In climbing, "to gaston" refers to a technique involving pulling to the side with the elbow pointed outwards and the thumb pointed down. It can be visualised as being similar to the motion involved if one were to pull open a closed elevator door. The technique can be used with one hand, or with both hands simultaneously with the back of the hands facing each other.
The technique is named after Gaston Rébuffat, a famous French alpinist.
