Geelong railway station is located on the Warrnambool line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the city of Geelong opening on 1 November 1856.[1][2] It is one of only two in Victoria to have a 19th-century train shed (along with Ballarat) and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.[3][4]

History[edit]

Geelong station was built as the terminus of the Geelong and Melbourne Railway Company line. It was a dead ended terminus located on the site of the present Law Courts complex. In 1876 the railway was extended south to Colac, and the station relocated to its present location.[1]

Up until the 1990s there was a goods yard, including a large goods shed, located on the eastern side of the station.[5] A locomotive depot remains to the north, and carriage stabling sidings are to the west.

The station is currently getting a $7.3 million upgrade to improve access for disabled commuters, upgrades include a new footbridge at the southern end of the station with stairs and lifts, a new ramp at the northern end of the station to be used in case of a emergency, and works to bring station facilites to meet the DDA act.[6]

Platforms & services[edit]

Geelong has one island platform with two faces and one side platform. It is serviced by V/Line Geelong and Warrnambool line services.[7][8] Some services terminate at Geelong although most continue to other destinations.
