Genesis 1976–1982 is a box set of five studio albums by Genesis. It was released on 2 April 2007 in Europe by EMI and on 15 May 2007 in North America by Atlantic/Rhino. The 6-CD/6-DVD box set includes newly remixed[2] versions of the albums A Trick of the Tail, Wind & Wuthering, ...And Then There Were Three..., Duke, and Abacab. The sixth pair of discs includes B-side songs.

Each CD also has an associated DVD which features audio versions of the albums in 5.1 surround sound, as well as videos for songs from that album or tour, new interviews and photo galleries.

[edit] Audio formats

In the European and Japanese releases of this box set, the CDs are hybrid SACD/CDs. The SACD layer is a multichannel surround sound remix.[3]

In the Canadian and U.S. releases of this box set, standard CDs with no SACD layer are included.[4]

In all versions of the box set, the DVDs are DVD-Video format (not DVD-Audio), although they contain both audio and video tracks. These DVDs include three audio mixes: DTS 5.1-channel surround sound, Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound, and Dolby Digital stereo.[5] The DTS surround sound is a slightly compressed version of the surround sound on the SACDs,[6] and the Dolby surround sound is a slightly inferior quality to the DTS.[7]

All of the audio tracks on these CDs were remixed in stereo and surround sound by producer Nick Davis, with the sole exception of "Say It's Alright Joe", which was not remixed because the band was unable to locate the multitrack recordings.[8]

Notes:

  • "It's Yourself", recorded during A Trick of the Tail's sessions (and excerpted to open "Los Endos"), this track was released as the B-Side to "Your Own Special Way" in February 1977. The version on this box set fades out earlier than the original version, but also adds an extra verse taken from an early demo of the song. As of 2007, the original B-side version of this song has not been released on CD.
  • "Match Of The Day", "Pigeons", and "Inside And Out" constituted the Spot the Pigeon EP, released in May 1977.
  • "Vancouver" and "The Day The Light Went Out" constituted a double B-Side for the "Many Too Many" EP, released in June 1978.
  • "Open Door" constituted the B-side of the "Duchess" single, released in May 1980.
  • "Evidence of Autumn" constituted the B-side of the "Misunderstanding" single, released in August 1980.
  • "Naminanu" constituted the B-side of the "Keep It Dark" single, released in October 1981.
  • "Submarine" constituted the B-side of the "Man on the Corner" single, released in March 1982. The version on this box set includes the original ending, unlike the truncated version that appeared in Genesis Archive 2: 1976-1992.
  • "Paperlate", "You Might Recall", and "Me And Virgil" constituted the 3X3 EP released in May 1982 in the UK. In the USA and Canada, these three tracks, along with "Evidence Of Autumn" and "Open Door", constituted the fourth side of the US version of the Three Sides Live LP, as well as the CD releases of that album prior to 1996.
