Glossword is an open source tool written in PHP intended to create and publish an online multilingual dictionary, glossary, or reference.

History[edit]

Glossword was started by Dmitry N. Shilnikov as simple web-based dictionary management system for his own needs when he has studied in Moscow University for the Humanities in 2001.

Several times the development of the software has been closed and reopened again because of several reasons, including the lack of time.

Features provided by the program include:

  1. Web interface;
  2. Import data from TSV, CSV, XML, Plain text, Glossword XML;
  3. Export data to various formats: CSV, TSV, XML, Glossword XML;
  4. Indexing and searching through millions of definitions;
  5. Automatically generated alphabetical index for dictionary;
  6. Multilevel cache engine improves productivity for an HTML-output;
  7. UTF-8 encoding. Multiple languages can be used in a one dictionary at the same time;

There are two different versions of Glossword:

  • 1.9.x - component for a CMS.
  • 1.8.x and below - stand-alone web-application.

1.9.1 March 15, 2010 A custom XML files can be imported, including RSS/Atom.
1.9.0 March 1, 2010 This version starts a new branch of development. It is now a component for the Joomla! CMS, which can be installed in the usual way.

1.8.8 April 29, 2008 A new option was added to enable simultaneous access for users with the same login names.
1.8.7 April 9, 2008 This release adds new features like a menu manager, permissions manager, and virtual keyboards manager. Several built-in alphabetic orders were added, including Azerbaijani, Kurmanji, Pushto, and Turkish. The compatibility with PHP 5.3.0 was greatly improved.
1.8.6 December 2, 2007 This version implements the history of changes for terms, a custom alphabetic order for dictionaries.
1.8.5 September 21, 2007 This release adds the ability to locate any term or dictionary under a custom URL.
1.8.4 August 23, 2007 This version introduces extended search engine optimization support. mod rewrite is no longer required. Editors receives the ability to delay a term being published. New features include an improved CAPTCHA algorithm, OpenSearch support.
1.8.3 June 21, 2007 This version introduces a feature for protecting the feedback form against spam messages. A new "backup" option was provided in the maintenance section along with the ability to select extra time ranges for pages with exportable data and the ability to search in incomplete terms only.
1.8.0 October 7, 2006 This version has major improvements in the user interface, administrative functions, and visual design. Features like multilingual topic names, the ability to import and export topic trees, contents from custom pages, and visual themes make the software more practical to use.
1.7.0 June 9, 2005 A user may now create custom, nested, and multilingual pages with embedded PHP-code. Glossword may be installed as a multidomain/multiuser platform where there is one source directory but several installations.
1.6.4 November 9, 2004 This version features compatibility with PHP 5, the ability to be integrated with Mambo CMS and Google Ads.
1.6.3 July 9, 2004 A new installation wizard, customizable post-processing functions, support for Unicode Normalization.

1.4.1 November 15, 2002 Features compatibility with HTTPS, disabled Cookies. Video Guide was added. Completely new search engine with the ability to search cross any characters, including Chinese. Search engine supports stopwords, also features additional search abilities, such as simple query language. Built-in support for Apache mod rewrite. Automatically built alphabetical index for non-Latin characters. All scripts and database have been switched to use UTF-8 encoding. Valid XHTML 1.0 code.
