Goodwood railway station is the last common railway station of the Noarlunga, Tonsley and Belair lines when travelling away from Adelaide. The Belair line diverges southeast towards Millswood (closed) and Unley Park Stations, while the Noarlunga and Tonsley lines diverge southwest towards Clarence Park. The Glenelg tram line crosses over the railway lines immediately south of Goodwood station.
The station is located on the border of the Adelaide inner-southern suburbs of Goodwood and Forestville, 5.0 km by rail from Adelaide Railway Station.
The station opened on 5 March 1883[1] with the opening of the Adelaide to Aldgate section of the Adelaide-Melbourne railway line.

Goodwood station has three platforms serving the three broad gauge tracks of the three southern metropolitan lines. The fourth and westernmost track, which is part of the standard gauge line to Melbourne, bypasses the no-longer-used fourth platform.
(The following description is easier to understand if you are also looking at an aerial photograph or a map of the area.)
From the north of the stations, there are 4 tracks between Greenhill Road and the station. The westernmost track is standard gauge, and the other 3 are broad gauge.
The yard immediately south of the station allows trains on broad gauge lines to transfer from any of the 3 platforms served by broad gauge to any of the broad gauge lines. The three broad gauge tracks then split into four broad gauge tracks, with two tracks heading southeast along the Belair line alignment, and the other two tracks heading southwest along the Noarlunga and Tonsley alignment. This also allows a crossing loop on the Belair line.
The westernmost and now fifth track, (standard gauge), remains separate from all of the broad gauge tracks, and then crosses the two Noarlunga tracks (from west to east). Keeping west of the two Belair tracks, it heads southeast and follows the Belair alignment. The two Belair broad gauge tracks then merge into one, and follow the eastern side of the Belair alignment. The standard gauge track then follows the western side of the Belair alignment; i.e. southeast of the Noarlunga / Belair separation, (sometimes referred to as the Goodwood junction), the standard gauge track is where (prior to 1995) the western of the dual broad gauge tracks from Goodwood to Belair used to be.

Prior to the One Nation gauge standardisation project in 1995, all four tracks at Goodwood were broad gauge, and the Belair line was dual broad gauge tracks.[2]
The Belair trains typically used Platform 1 for Down Services, and Platform 2 for Up Services, whilst Noarlunga and Tonsley lines used Platform 3 for Down Services, and Platform 4 for Up Services. The yard immediately south allowed trains to transfer from any platform to any line. The most common use of this feature was when Inter/Intrastate Freight and Passenger Trains would use the Noarlunga tracks to Goodwood from Keswick Rail Yards, then change to the Belair tracks through Goodwood Yard.
[edit] Royal Adelaide Show
Goodwood station is the main railway station servicing the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds. However, in recent years during the Royal Adelaide Show Week,[3] TransAdelaide has closed platform 1 at Goodwood, and exclusively devoted the eastern-most of the four tracks between Adelaide and Goodwood to a non-stop shuttle service between platform 1 at Adelaide Railway Station and a temporary platform at the Showgrounds named "Showground Central".[4] During this period, Belair Line movements are merged with Noarlunga Line movements through platforms 2 and 3 at Goodwood.
