Google Developer Expert

A Google Developers Expert (GDE) is a person recognized by Google as having exemplary expertise in web technologies or Google Developers products. GDEs are awarded by membership in the Google Developers Experts program, established and administered by Google. GDEs have a tenure of one year which can be extended upon continuous active contribution to the developer and open source community of that product. A Google Developers Expert cannot be a Google employee whilst a member of the program. GDEs are not permitted to "make any statements on behalf of Google or any Google company" and be clear that any opinions are not those of Google.[1]
As of September 2020, there are 832 people with this designation.[2]

Eligibility criteria
- Be a technical expert in the subject area.
- Display continued activity in the startup and/or developer ecosystem, by:
- Being an influential and recognized speaker at large and small tech conferences.
- Creating high quality technical content, including: tutorials, code samples, educational books, blog posts, and videos. (not on behalf of their employer)
- Mentoring tech entrepreneurs, startups and developers.
- Have the ability to articulate clearly and provide meaningful advice to others.
Application process
The current Google Developers Experts award process requires the candidate to:
- Submit written evidence of existing work demonstrating their engagement with the developer community for the supported Google product.
- Eligibility check by the Regional Lead and product point of contact from Google regarding the fit.
- Pass an interview with another GDE specialising in the supported product.
- Pass an interview with a Google employee with expertise in the supported product.
- Sign a non disclosure agreement with Google not to reveal any confidential information about future product information etc.
History
The Google Developer Experts program initially started in Japan as the Google Developer API Expert program.[3] In July 2012 Google renamed it to Google Developers Expert program and made it available to developers around the world.[4] In 2014 the official Google Developers Expert site started referring to the program as Google Developer Experts.[5]
