[edit] Hallmarks
[edit] Networks
Goosebumps began airing on FOX Kids starting in 1995 and ended in 1998, with reruns on FOX Family lasting until 2000. For specifically the month of October, Cartoon Network aired the episodes in 2007-09 each October. It was confirmed by R.L. Stine that starting September 6, 2011 the channel The Hub will air the series every weekday, which coincidentally air's his new series R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour
[edit] GB-7 rating
Since its first broadcast, an episode of Goosebumps would begin with a warning -- "Goosebumps is rated GB-7, because it may be too spooky for children under seven." However, when the V-chip took effect, the GB-7 rating was discontinued though the disclaimer remained, and Goosebumps was then rated TV-Y7 when it aired on Fox Kids, TV-PG when it aired on Cartoon Network and it manages to return the TV-Y7 rating but with FV added towards it (TV-Y7-FV), that is currently re-running on The Hub.
[edit] Opening sequence
The opening sequence starts with a man dressed in black carrying his briefcase up a hill. The name engraved on the briefcase reveals the mysterious man to be Goosebumps author R. L. Stine. A strong wind blows, Stine's case opens, and his papers fly out, one of which turns into a shadow resembling the "G" seen on the Goosebumps logo and glides through a town. The "G" passes by a woman on a billboard, making her drab and depressed, and passes by a dog on a porch, which makes its eyes glow an evil yellow (this is referenced to in the episode "My Hairiest Adventure" and was also used to represent the show in its UK airings on Fox Kids). The "G" then creeps past a tree and into the front door of a house and begins showing a quick montage of clips from several episodes with an announcer growling, "Viewer, beware, you're in for a scare!", remade from the tagline, "Reader, beware, you're in for a scare!" used in the Goosebumps book series. In season two, the opening was shortened, speeding up the Goosebumps "G" gliding through town and removing the quick episode montage in the doorway.
In season three, also known as "Ultimate Goosebumps" the word "ultimate" appears above the Goosebumps logo the opening underwent a few changes. A green slime and a lightning effect were added when the man in black walks up the hill with his briefcase and his papers fly out. However, instead of the papers being blown through town, the man in black turns into bats which fly at the screen. The quick episode montage was added back but clips from different episodes were used. In season four, the opening remains the same but, they don't use the word ultimate.
[edit] Reception
[edit] United Kingdom and Ireland censorship
Goosebumps was originally broadcast in the UK as a part of BBC's children's program lineup on CBBC from 1996 to 2000. Because of the UK's stringent censorship (particularly over content that is considered "gross" or may traumatize more sensitive viewers), many Goosebumps episodes were either skipped over (such as the Night of the Living Dummy II, Night of the Living Dummy III, Bride of the Living Dummy, and The Haunted Mask) or aired with heavy cuts made, particularly to the twist endings. The Werewolf of Fever Swamp and Calling All Creeps are the only Goosebumps episodes to receive a 12 rating by the BBFC. Despite this, the episodes can only air after 6:00pm and are still edited for content. Unlike CBBC, the cable channel Jetix (in UK and Ireland) has aired Goosebumps episodes with little to no edits (though "A Shocker on Shock Street" was edited to remove Marty getting electrocuted into submission when it's revealed that Erin and Marty are robot children programmed to test out the Shock Street park).
