The 40th Grammy Awards were held on February 25, 1998. They recognized accomplishments by musicians from the previous year. Rock icon Bob Dylan, Alison Krauss, and R. Kelly emerged as the big winners winning three awards each.[1]

The 1998 Grammys had several memorable and shocking moments. Among them:
- Wu-Tang Clan member Ol' Dirty Bastard interrupts Shawn Colvin's Song of the Year acceptance speech to protest the Clan's loss in the Best Rap Album category.
- Immediately after performing "How Do I Live", LeAnn Rimes loses Best Female Country Vocal Performance to Trisha Yearwood's cover version of exactly the same song.
- Aretha Franklin performs the aria "Nessun Dorma" after standing in for Luciano Pavarotti at the last minute.
- During a Bob Dylan performance, a shirtless backup dancer named Michael Portnoy rushes to the front of the stage with the words "Soy Bomb" written on his chest.
- When presenting the nominees for Album of the Year Usher referred to Bob Dylan as Bill Dylan by accident.
- Paula Cole gives the finger during her performance of "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?"
