Greenstone is a suite of software tools for building and distributing digital library collections on the Internet or CD-ROM. It is open-source, multilingual software, issued under the terms of the GNU General Public License.[1]

Greenstone is produced by the New Zealand Digital Library Project at the University of Waikato, and has been developed and distributed in cooperation with UNESCO and the Human Info NGO in Belgium.[1] Its developers received the International Federation for Information Processing's 2004 Namur Award for "contributions to the awareness of social implications of information technology, and the need for an holistic approach in the use of information technology that takes account of social implications."[2]

Greenstone is easy-to-use software for building large, searchable collections of digital documents. It has a Greenstone Librarians Interface (GLI) for librarians or information professionals to build collections without computer programming knowledge. Installation, creation and customization of digital library collections using Greenstone can be learnt by anyone familiar with computer use within a few days.[citation needed]

Greenstone is capable of building up multi-media digital documents such as text, PDF, audio and video very easily. The text, PDF, HTML and similar documents are converted into Greenstone Archive Format (GAF) which is an XML equivalent format.[citation needed]

Greenstone can build collections of Unicode documents in any language. Greenstone is the only software that can build Malayalam language documents into digital library collections.[citation needed]
