Grip-car is an early contemporary term referring to what is more commonly known as Cable car. The Grip car was invented in San Francisco. Grip cars to pull trains of up to three trailers was used on the Chicago City Railway. The Cable car was invented by Andrew Smith Hallidie in San Francisco in 1873.
