The Group of Eight (Go8) is a coalition of leading Australian tertiary institutions, intensive in research and comprehensive in general and professional education. It was established informally as a network of vice-chancellors in 1994 and was formally incorporated in 1999.
The Go8 aims to enhance the contribution of its member universities to the nation’s social, economic, cultural and environmental well-being and prosperity and extend the contribution of its member universities to the generation and preservation of the world’s stock of knowledge.
All members of the group except Australian National University (ANU), University of New South Wales (UNSW) and Monash University are known as "sandstone universities" and all of their primary campuses are based in the six largest Australian capital cities or the national capital in the case of ANU. The group is often referred to as an Australian version of the Ivy League
The group, in arguing for prioritisation of research funding and in lobbying for increased funding for the largest and most popular campuses, sometimes finds itself at odds with newer, regional and rural universities.[citation needed]
