The Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link (XRL), also known as Guangshen'gang XRL (officially Beijing–Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong High-Speed Railway, Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Section), is an express railway to be open in phases between 2011 and 2016. It will connect Kowloon, Hong Kong in the south and Panyu, Guangzhou, Guangdong in the north.
It is divided into two sections, the Guangshen section with four to six stations, and the Hong Kong Section, with one station. Service on the Guangshen section officially opened on December 26, 2011. Construction of the Hong Kong Section began on January 2010, with service scheduled to open in 2015.
Under the current plan the total distance will be 142 kilometres, and the expected travel time from West Kowloon Terminus in Kowloon to Guangzhou South Railway Station in Shibi, Guangzhou will be 48 minutes. It will be connected with the Wuguang High-Speed Railway at Guangzhou South Station, and the Xiamen–Shenzhen Railway at Shenzhen North Railway Station.
The Guangshen section connects Guangzhou, Dongguan, and Shenzhen in Guangdong. The total distance is 116 kilometres and the expected travel time between Guangzhou's Guangzhou South Railway Station (廣州南站) and Shenzhen's Futian Station (福田) is 36 minutes. Trains on this line will run at a maximum speed of 350 km/h. Construction cost will be covered by the Guangdong Province People's Government and the Ministry of Railways of the People's Republic of China.
Hong Kong section
Under the current plan the total distance of the Hong Kong section is 26 kilometres, most of which through underground tunnels. The dedicated track will enable a top speed of 200 km/h; the expected travel time from Kowloon, scheduled to open in 2015, to Shenzhen's Futian Station is 12 minutes.
Opposition to HK section
The Hong Kong section has been controversial since 2009 when demonstrators opposed the project. It later escalated into larger protests in 2010 with fierce opposition from various groups. Despite the protests, on 15 January 2010, the Legislative Council of Hong Kong approved HK$66.9 billion (US$8.6 billion) in funding, by 31 votes to 21.
