[edit] Release and reception
Guy peaked at twenty-seven on the U.S. Billboard 200 and reached number one on the R&B Albums chart where it remained for five nonconsecutive weeks.[1] The album was certified platinum in March 1989 and double platinum by July 1994.[2] In addition, Guy was the highest charting R&B album on the Billboard Year-End chart for 1989.
Alex Henderson of Allmusic praised the work and credited it as the album that popularized the new jack swing genre, calling it "one of the most seminal and influential releases of the late '80s" and stating "for anyone with even a casual interest in new jack, this CD is absolutely essential."[3]
[edit] Appearances in other media
The song "Groove Me" appears in the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas video game soundtrack, on the fictitious radio station CSR 103.9.
