Hakan Çalhanoğlu (Turkish pronunciation: [ˈhaːkan ˈt͡ʃaɫhanoːɫu], born 8 February 1994) is a Turkish footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen and the Turkish national team.

Career[edit]

Çalhanoğlu signed a four-year deal for Hamburger SV from Karlsruher SC to join in the 2013 summer transfer window.[1] On 4 July 2014, he left Hamburger for league rivals Bayer Leverkusen, signing a five-year contract with a transfer fee of €14.5 million.[2]

International career[edit]

After years of playing for the Turkish youth team, Çalhanoğlu received his first senior call-up for Turkey in 31 August 2013 for a game against Andorra, where he made his debut in the second half coming on as a substitute in a 5–0 win. Prior to that he was approached by Germany, his birthplace. Çalhanoğlu declined their offer in favour of playing for the country of his parents. On 25 May 2014, he made his second performance for the Turkish national team in a friendly match against Ireland. He was on the team sheet for the starting line-up as left midfielder.
