It was founded in 1937 by Gangabisenji Agrawal, as a retail sweets and namkeen shop in Bikaner, Rajasthan. Haldiram's has its own outlets and range of restaurants in Nagpur and Delhi. Now, Haldiram's products are exported to several countries worldwide.
Shri Ganga Bishan Aggarwal commonly known as Haldiram started selling namkeen, papads and bhujia etc. and was trading under the trade name and trade mark “Haldiram Bhujiawala”. Subsequently his sons also joined him in the business. The family chart of Late Ganga Bishan is as under:-
1. Ganga Bishan d.1980
a. Mool Chand d.1985
i. Shiv Kishan
ii. Shiv Rattan
iii. Manohar Lal
iv. Madhu Sudan
b. Rameshwar Lal d.1991
i. Prabhu Shankar
c. Sati Das
d. Lachmi Bai
Shri Ganga Bishan who was also known as Haldiram Bhujiawala, had been doing his business of manufacture and sale of salted preparations like Bhujia, papads and sweets etc. since his chilhood since before 1941 under the name and style of " Chand Mal Ganga Bishan" and "HALDIRAM BHUJIAWALA" initially in Bikaner and later on also started in Calcutta he formed a partnership firm in the year 1965 under the name and style of M/s. Chand Mal Ganga Bishan with four partners: (1) Ganga Bishan (himself), (2) Mool Chand (his son), (3) Shiv Kishan (son of Mool Chand) and (4) Smt. Kamla Devi, w/o Shri Rameshwar Lal (his daughter in law). The said firm had adopted the trademark of HALDIRAM BHUJIAWALA".
There was a bitter court battle for many years. The court delivered a final verdict in 1999, when Haldiram's units were formally split as three separate companies with specific business territories as per Haldiram’s will, into three separate entities —Haldiram Manufacturing with its base in the national capital region to serve the north Indian market, Haldiram Foods with its base in Nagpur to serve the entire west and south Indian market and Haldiram Bhujiawala with its hub in Kolkata to serve the entire eastern market. Rameshwar Lal owns the unit in Kolkata, as others, Moolchand and Shivkishen Aggarwal own units at Delhi and Nagpur respectively. The bitter fallout led to a clear demarcation of territory as Haldiram’s, Haldiram’s Prabhuji and Haldiram Nagpur are restricted to Delhi, Kolkata and Nagpur respectively. Also, Bikaji is another popular offshoot of the Haldiram family brand name.
Haldiram's products in Delhi and the NCR are sold under the brand name of "Haldiram". Products in the Kolkata region are sold under the brand name of "Haldiram's Prabhuji" or "Haldiram Bhujiawala" while products in the Nagpur region are sold under the brand name of "Haldiram's Nagpur".
