Nội Bài International Airport (IATA: HANICAO: VVNB) (Vietnamese: Sân bay Quốc tế Nội Bài) in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is the largest airport in the north of the country. It is the main airport serving Hanoi, Vietnam, replacing the role of Gia Lam Airport.

The airport is currently the main hub of the country's flag carrier Vietnam Airlines, major hub of Vietjet Air, Jetstar Pacific, and previously Air Mekong and Indochina Airlines which have both now halted operations.

The airport is located in Phu Minh Commune in the Soc Son District, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) northeast of downtown Hanoi, using Bac Thang Long highway connecting with the city through Thăng Long bridge. The distance will be shortened by 15 km when the new Nhật Tân Bridge is completed in October 2014. It can also be reached by National Road 3, which connects it with the eastern suburbs of the city. The airport is also close to some satellite cities of Hanoi such as Vinh Yen, Bac Ninh and Thai Nguyen.

The airport currently has two terminal buildings. Terminal 1, which was inaugurated in 2001, with initial capacity of 6 million passengers a year, has become overcrowded, having handled 11 million passengers on average in recent years. The expansion of terminal 1, denoted as Zone E, commenced operations in late December 2013, with the aim of immediately reducing pressure to the main terminal. The extension is linked with the main building by enclosed corridors. The newly opened Zone E offers 25,000 square meters of spaces and is capable of receiving 3 million passengers each year, handling domestic flights only. Although the total capacity has been increased to 9 million passengers per year, it is still over-capacity with the current traffic volume.

The prolonged congestion will be solved after the opening of the new International Terminal (Terminal 2) at the end of 2014. It will provide space for an additional 10 million passengers, increasing total capacity to 19 million per year.

Facilities[edit]

At 650 ha, Noi Bai is the second-largest airport in Vietnam, behind the 800 ha Tan Son Nhat International Airport. A larger international terminal (T2, with a capacity of 16 million passengers per annum) has been under construction since March 2012, with completion expected by the end of 2014. A new domestic terminal extension (T1, denoted Lobby E) was also completed in early 2014.

The airport has a 3,800-meter paved runway (CAT II – 11R/29L – opened in August 2006) and an older 3,200-meter paved runway (CAT I – 11L/29R)

The older runway is closed for upgrade for 4 months from August to December 2014. The distance between the two runways is only 250 metres, so the airport currently has a maximum capacity of 10 million passengers a year in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organisation safety regulations.[1]

  • 2 January 1978: Airport opened.
  • 10 October 2001: The new Terminal 1 began operation.
  • 7 April 2005: Tiger Airways started thrice-weekly flights between Hanoi and Singapore after launching direct flights between Hồ Chí Minh City and Singapore on 1 April 2005. Tiger Airways became the first budget airline to operate in Vietnam.
  • 17 October 2005: Low-cost carrier AirAsia launched direct flights between Hanoi and Bangkok. It is the second budget airline serving Vietnam after Tiger Airways.
  • August 2006: The second runway (1B – 11R/29L) opened
  • 2 September 2007: An Airbus A380 landed at Nội Bài.
  • Since mid-2010, Nội Bài has been a SkyTeam hub; Vietnam Airlines joined the network in 2010.
  • March 2013: First arrival of a Boeing 747-8F (Cargolux)
  • 29 December 2013: The airport opened new Lobby E of Terminal 1, which can help the airport handle more passengers (3 million passengers).
  • 1st June 2014: First arrival of a Boeing 787-8 (All Nippon Airways)

In 2010, the airport received approximately 9.5 million passengers, which made it over-capacity, and accounted for one-third of international departures and arrivals at Vietnam's three main international airports. The designed capacity of Terminal 1 is 6 million passengers per annum.[2]

Terminal, airlines and destinations[edit]

As of December 2011, there was only one passenger terminal at Nội Bài Airport. In March 2012 the construction of a new terminal (Terminal 2 or T2) next to the existing one with designed capacity of 16 million passengers per annum started. The 996m long new terminal 2, funded by a Japan International Cooperation Agency loan[3] was designed by Japan Airport Consultants and being built by Taisei Corporation, is expected to be put into operation early 2015 together with a new freeway connection the airport to downtown Hanoi.
