[edit] Early life
Harris Jayaraj hails from a pious Christian Nadar family and was born and brought up in Chennai.[1] Harris studied at Krishnaswamy Matric School, K.K.Nagar. His father, S. M. Jayakumar, was a noted film guitarist and an assistant to Malayalam music director Shyam and later became a noted musician and film composer. Jayakumar wanted Harris to become a great singer, but his interest was in becoming a musician and he once confessed that he couldn't sing well. Harris, at the age of six began his formal music training by learning carnatic music.[2]
He learned music at the Chennai centre of Trinity College of Music, London and scored the highest mark in Asia in the 4th grade exam.[3] He started his music career as a keyboardist in 1987 at age twelve and went on to work under more than twenty five music directors in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Bengali and Oriya, working in more than 600 projects till the year 2000[4] He worked under noted composers including Raj-Koti, A. R. Rahman, Mani Sharma, Karthik Raja, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Vidyasagar.[5] While working as an additional programmer under Rahman, he composed music for various television commercials including the famous Coca-Cola commercial featuring actor Vijay.[6] In his early years, he admired music composers M. S. Viswanathan, A. R. Rahman, percussionist Aruljothi Balagopal and Hans Zimmer.
[edit] Film scoring
Harris ventured into film scoring with Gautham Menon's Minnale. The album was well received, particularly the song Vaseegara turned out as a sensational hit.[7][8] He received the Filmfare award for Best Music Director in his very first movie, breaking the 9 years continuous record of A. R. Rahman. The following Tamil movie albums 12B and Majunu met with high acclaim and praise.[9] His Minnale score was later used in the Hindi version, titled Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein also directed by Gautham Menon.[10][11] He then worked in the movie Lesa Lesa directed by Priyadarshan.[12] For the first time in India the title song of the movie Lesa Lesa was released as a single prior to the album release date.[13] Harris made his debut in Tollywood with Vasu, which received lots of appreciation and gained him lots of fans in Andhra Pradesh as well. With his back to back successful albums Samurai, Saamy and Kovil Harris emerged as a music director of reckoning in Kollywood.[14] He received Filmfare Best Music Director, Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Music Director and ITFA Best Music Director Award for Kaakha Kaakha, starring Suriya and Jyothika.[15] This film directed by Gautham Menon was a huge blockbuster and the songs met with great critical acclaim.[16] Gautham Menon remade the movie as Gharshana in Telugu which had two new songs apart from the Tamil version to suit the taste of Telugu audience.[17] The song Uyirin Uyire reused as Cheliya Cheliya in Telugu and Khwabon Khwabon in Hindi is considered as one of the biggest sensational hit of all time.
Following the success of Chellamae, Arasatchi, Arul and Thotti Jaya Harris worked on Ullam Ketkumae with director Jeeva with whom he had a very good rapport in 12B.[18][19] The music of this movie was appreciated for its excellency and synergy with the atmosphere in and out of the movie.[20] Director S. Shankar, one of the leading directors in Tamil Cinema paired up with Harris for his magnum opus movie Anniyan. It was the first time Shankar did not team up with A. R. Rahman and the album turned out to a grand success.[21][22] Veteran lyricist Vairamuthu praised the album for its excellency and wished Harris to go places after Anniyan.[23] Shankar confessed that working with Harris was a great experience and Harris has given amazing songs to the movie.[24][25] The sound tracks received several awards including Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Music Director and Filmfare Best Music Director Award.[26][27][28] The next movie he scored was Ghajini directed by A. R. Murugadoss, for which he received Tamil Nadu State film award for best music direction and best song(Oru Maalai). The movie had scintillating, party-hopping numbers which resulted in a huge commercial success in audio sales, especially the track Sutum Vizhi crossed 2 crore downloads and turned out to be phenomenally successful.[29] [30] Harris crafted a necessary classiness into the Gautham Menon's blockbuster crime movie Vettaiyadu Villaiyadu starring Kamal Haasan.[31] Gautham after the movie release confessed that he and Harris use to imply lot of efforts in film scoring, on his part he shares the entire script with Harris and provides input's from his side and that's how they made the Manjal Veyil song quirky without the traditional pallavi-charanam format.[32] Harris once again ventured into Tollywood with a successful album Sainikudu.[33] The music album of this movie was released simultaneously in 10 chosen venues from five different countries.[34]
Gautham considering the music and background score of Harris as a major asset of his films,[35] once again teamed up with Harris on a romantic-thriller Pachaikili Muthucharam. The soundtracks of Pachaikili Muthucharam reputed to be melancholic, lilting, mysterious, and alternatively catchy once gain resulting in an as usual, great Gautham-Harris combination.[36] The unique luster of Jeeva and Harris combo continued with Unnale Unnale.[37][38] The music album oozing with energy all through proved to be a cut above the rest.[39] With Munna Harris provided a sensational hit song Manasa which also fetched a Filmfare Best Singer Female award to Sadhana Sargam.
