HEAVY MONTRÉAL (formerly Heavy MTL) is a three-day heavy metal and hard rock festival in Montreal, Quebec, at Parc Jean-Drapeau on Île Sainte-Hélène, as well as various events at other venues across the city, held in the summer. It is one of the largest Heavy Metal festivals with usually around 70,000 people attending each year. More than 70,000 people attended the 2012 edition. The former name Heavy MTL served both as an abbreviation for Montreal and Metal. In 2014, the festival was officially renamed to HEAVY MONTRÉAL.
In 2011, a similar event, Heavy T.O., was created at Downsview Park in Toronto, Ontario. Both events are held the same weekends, with most bands playing one day in Montreal and the other in Toronto. However, the promoters ceased operations of the Toronto event after 2012 despite its popularity.
For 2014, Heavy MTL was renamed to Heavy Montréal as an "evolution" of the festival, with efforts made to include a wide array of styles in its programming.
