However word news has got an s as a last letter, that is an uncountable noun so it is never used in the plural and does not follow a.

N The election result are bad news for social welfare programs.

YesYThe election result is bad news for social welfare programs.

N For too long we have ignored these news.

YesY For too long we have ignored this news.

N Hong Kong wants to ban smoking in restaurants. This is a good news for non-smokers.

YesY ...This is good news for non-smokers.

So how can we mention to a single item of news? we can use news on its own, or say some news or, less frequently, a piece of news. As an example:

  • George Bush was in a meeting when he heard news of the attack.
  • I have some news that may cheer you up.
  • I just got a surprising piece of news.
