"Here We Go Again" is a pop-rock song that runs for three minutes and forty-four seconds. It has a similar up-tempo composition like previous singles "La La Land" and "Get Back". It plays over "buff guitar lines"[6] and deviates between styles of pop-rock and blues-rock[7]. "Here We Go Again" features a power-percussion and heavy production that, according to Stephanie Bruzzese of Commonsense Media, is similar to that of Lovato's contemporaries.[8] According to the digital sheet music published at Musicnotes.com by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, it is written in the key of F major.[9] The song has a moderate synth-rock groove and runs through a tempo of 144 beats per minute.[9] The song is set in common time, and Lovato's vocal range spans from F3 to F5.[9] Kerri Mason of Billboard wrote that on the song, Lovato sounded like "Kelly Clarkson's kid sister."[10] The song's lyrics chronicle Lovato's on-off relationship with an indecisive boy, singing that "Something about you is so addictive".[11] Margaret Wappler of Los Angeles Times compared the song's lyrics to that of Kelly Clarkson's single "Since U Been Gone" (2004).
[edit] Critical reception
"Here We Go Again" received generally positive response from contemporary music critics. While reviewing Here We Go Again, Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic Guide named "Here We Go Again" as one of the album's top tracks, while praising it as "fun" "particularly when Lovato tears into hooky power pop like..., "Solo," "Remember December," and the stomping "So Far So Great,".[12] He further commented that the song matches her "adolescent energy and spirit, which remain her most appealing qualities."[12] Jeff Miers of The Buffalo News wrote that the album's title track is "safe and pretty predictable, but also incredibly catchy."[13] Joey Guerra of The Houston Chronicle singled "Here We Go Again" from the rest of the album, commenting that it "isn't as immediate a grabber as the previous singles."[14] Grace Medford of Stuck Records praised the vocals and chorus, but labeled it as the weakest track on the album, commenting that "Something about it doesn’t ring true – not pop/rock enough to fit on the first record but not blues/rock enough to fit on the second."[7] Shaun Kitchener of Trash Lounge noted the song as "a cuter version of Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Since U Been Gone’," while further commenting that it is "a radio-friendly pop-rock nugget that breaks no new ground whatsoever but is likeable enough to warrant a second listen."[15] Stephanie Bruzzese of Commonsense Media rated it three out of five stars, praising Lovato's vocals and as "a refreshing change of pace from most of today's synth-pop songs."[8]
[edit] Commercial performance
In the United States, the song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number fifty-one.[16] The song fell down the chart for two weeks before rising number twenty-four on the issue dated August 1, 2009, the week the song was also named the greatest digital gainer.[17] The following week, coinciding with the parent album's release , "Here We Go Again" reached its peak at number fifteen[16], becoming her highest peaking single at the time and her first top-twenty single as a solo artist. The song lasted four more weeks on the chart exiting at number eighty-nine.[16] In Canada, the song entered the Canadian Hot 100 at number eighty-six as the weeks highest debut[18] and peaked at number sixty-one on the issue dated July 18, 2009.[19] The song lasted for a total of five weeks on the chart.[16] On the issue dated August 24, 2009, the song entered the New Zealand Singles Chart and peaked at number thirty-eight.[20] It was the song's last week on the chart.[16]
[edit] Music video
The music video (directed by The Malloys) was filmed on June 8, 2009, and premiered on June 26 on Disney Channel. Through her official sites, fans were told they could participate in the making of the video.[21][22] The video starts with Lovato in her dressing room talking to her boyfriend on the phone. It is assumed that the boyfriend has ended the relationship as she rips up a picture of him. However a few minutes later he calls back but Lovato ignores the phone and heads to the stage where she performs. Her boyfriend is shown visiting the concert, and after Lovato is finished the performance she heads back to her dressing room, where he meets her with a rose, thus beginning their relationship again, staying true to the theme of the song. In this video, Demi Lovato dresses in all black.
