Heris (Persian: هريس; also Romanized as Herīs, Harīs, and Hiriz)[1] is a city in and the capital of Heris County, East Azerbaijan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 9,513, in 2,359 families.[2]
Heris is the center of one of the weaving areas in the Iranian part of Azerbaijan, and gave its name to Heriz rugs.
Carpets [edit]
Carpets from the town's workshops are considered to be of better quality than those from the inaccessible mountain villages.[citation needed] The typical Heris red colour and a highly individual medallion are the main characteristics of these popular carpets.[citation needed] Old and antique examples, in various blue tones, are occasionally found in the trade and at auctions. Brown, beige and turquoise shades indicate older pieces.[citation needed] Heris silk carpets are exceptionally finely knotted and are both rare and very beautiful.[citation needed] The designs of old Heris rugs differ radically from those of new pieces.[citation needed]
