Heros is a genus which includes several fish species in the Cichlidae family. They are native to rivers in the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America. These were often previously included in the "catch-all" genus Cichlasoma.
Most commonly encountered in the aquarium trade is the severum, Heros severus, available commercially in its gold coloration as well as the wild-type green. It is unclear whether aquarium severums are actually Heros severus or whether they are Heros efasciatus hybrids.
[edit] Species
Four species are presently recognized by FishBase in this genus:
- Heros efasciatus Heckel, 1840
- Heros notatus (Jardine in Schomburgk, 1843)
- Heros severus Heckel, 1840 – also known as severum or banded cichlid
- Heros spurius Heckel, 1840
Some authorities recognize a fifth species, H. appendiculatus Castelnau, 1855, but it is treated as a synonym of H. efasciatus by FishBase.
