Hiroko Matsumoto (松本 裕子 Matsumoto Hiroko?, 1936-2003) was a Japanese model.

[edit] Biography

Pierre Cardin met her in 1960 during a trip to Japan, where he fell in love with. She would follow him to Paris.[1][2] Pierre Cardin chose her as his top model. Named Miss Hiroko, she was the first ever Japanese model for a French clothing collection.[3] .[4]

Matsumoto ended her modelling career in 1967. She married Henry Berghauer, manager at groupe Pierre Cardin, and future manager of Hanae Mori, and then of fashion clothing company Hervé Léger.[5][6] She then became an actress and played the Japanese lover, Kyoto, in the 1970's movie Domicile Conjugal made by François Truffaut. She wore dresses from Hanae Mori in this movie.[7]

A few years later, Hiroko Matsumoto married Jean-Claude Cathalan, manager at Roussel Uclaf[8][9] He joined the fashion industry and became the president of Révillon, of Parfums Caron, of Jean-Louis Scherrer and today the president of Comité Montaigne[8][10] Their girl, Maxime Cathalan was kidnapped in Neuilly-sur-Seine at the age of 20 months in front of her nurse. The child was given back to its parents on 23 June 1975 for a 1.5 million Franc ransom.[11]

Hiroko Cathalan died in 2003 at the age of 67 in Paris after a long period in the hospital. Her cause of death continues to be a mystery to this day.[12]
