House Party is a 1975 album by The Temptations for the Gordy (Motown) label. Made up of vaulted songs compiled without the group's input, Otis Williams referred to the album in his Temptations autobiography as a "mismatched collection of, pardon my French, shit." House Party marks the Temptations debut for new falsetto Glenn Leonard, replacing Damon Harris. Despite Williams' reservations regarding the circumstances surrounding the compilation and release of these tracks, the album includes some great performances from the group and a number of producers.
Highlights include a rare & surprisingly fine lead vocal by Otis Williams on his own composition, "Darling, Stand By Me (Song For My Woman)," Richard Street's ballad, "If I Don't Love You This Way," and Glenn Leonard's stunning debut as a Temptation in the ensemble vocal of "What You Need Most (I Do Best Of All)." Fan-favorite bass singer Melvin Franklin delivers one of his finest lead vocals on "Ways Of A Grown-Up Man," which may be the best track on the album. Although these songs were dated and unsuitable for the commercial trends of the day, this is still a rewarding album for fans of the genre and the group.
