Howell High School (HHS) is a four-year comprehensive public high school located in Howell Township, New Jersey, as part of the Freehold Regional High School District. Other students from Howell Township attend Freehold Township High School in Freehold Township. Portions of Howell students used to be sent to Colts Neck High School in Colts Neck Township, but future students in those neighborhoods now attend HHS.

As of the 2006-07 school year, the school had an enrollment of 2,056 students and 146 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 14.1.[1]

The school was the 159th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 316 schools statewide, in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2008 cover story on the state's Top Public High Schools. The school was ranked 181st in the magazine's September 2006 issue, which surveyed 316 schools across the state.[2]

[edit] General information

  • The Howell High School mascot is the Rebel. He looks like Yosemite Sam with white hair and a blue uniform. (The mascot was selected due to the school's original name, "Southern Freehold Regional High School," which lasted until the district expanded to three schools in 1968.[3])
  • Blue and gray are the school colors currently, although originally all schools in the district had blue and gold as the school colors at least until the late 1970s. This was originally done so the district could attempt to realize some cost savings on uniforms for extracurriculars.
  • The Fine & Performing Arts Center (FPAC) is housed here. Freehold Regional Performing Arts Center
  • The Scholar's Center for the Humanities is housed here.

[edit] Programs

Howell High School is home to two of the district's specialized learning centers. Students in eighth grade from any of the seven towns (Freehold Township, Freehold Borough, Howell Township, Colts Neck, Marlboro, Manalapan and Englishtown) may apply. The FPAC program consists of actors, dancers, and entertainment technology students. Students work for 4 years to hone their skills in one of these three aspects. While anyone may join Howell High School's drama club, FPACers commonly dominate the shows, both on stage and behind the curtain. The Humanities Program consists of a wide variety of students, who take part in advanced classes on history, art, literature, computer applications and philosophy. Their history class, English class and elective are exclusively for Humanities students.

[edit] Athletics

Howell High School competes in the Shore Conference, an athletic conference made up of private and public high schools centered at the Northern Jersey Shore.[4] All schools in this conference are located within Monmouth County and Ocean County. The league operates under the jurisdiction of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).

The 2007 football team won the Central Jersey, Group IV state sectional championship with a 46-13 win over West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South in a game played at Rutgers Stadium. The win was the first sectional title in team history.[5][6]
