Hughie Hogg

Played by comedian Jeff Altman, Hughie Hogg is a fictional character on the American television series The Dukes of Hazzard.

Hughie was Boss Hogg's equally crooked (maybe even more crooked) nephew. Hughie also wore an all-white suit, but unlike Boss Hogg had a slender build. A con man and a disguise artist, Hughie seemed to completely lack any moral compass while his "Uncle Boss" deep down had a conscience. Boss would typically call Hughie in once-per-season to come up with a particularly dastardly plot to get the Dukes out of the way once-and-for-all; but Hughie would often turn on Boss, twisting the situation to his own means. Despite this, Boss would give Hughie "one last chance" each time he returned.

Jeff Altman appeared as Hughie Hogg six times in the series. However, the episode that introduced the character, "Uncle Boss", despite being filmed two episodes into the second season, was not broadcast until the third season, by which time, Hughie had already been seen in his second appearance, as temporary sheriff in the second season episode "Arrest Jesse Duke". ("Uncle Boss" is noticeably out of sequence even to the more casual viewer as, besides Hughie's introduction despite him having been seen before, Enos is still the deputy despite having left for Los Angeles a few episodes before, and Daisy is still driving her yellow Plymouth Roadrunner that her cousins Bo and Luke had let run off a cliff the season before.)

In "Arrest Jesse Duke", Hughie was definitely not as crooked as he would appear in later episodes (presumably due to the character being brought in as a last minute replacement for the absent James Best. who played the show's regular Sheriff, Rosco P. Coltrane). In this episode, Hughie appears shocked when he hears of Boss Hogg's involvement in a car-stripping business.

  • Jeff Altman was apparently not able to reprise his role as Hughie in the 6th season episode "How to Succeed in Hazzard" and was replaced by another nephew of Boss's named Dewey (Hughie's older brother), which was a parody of Donald Duck's three nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie.
